At RIS, the emphasis in the Primary section is on improving the conceptual understanding of core subjects. Thematic and integrated learning helps students to explore lessons outside the textbooks. Introduction to language training, logical reasoning and creative writing is done at this stage. At this level we introduce children to the excitement and challenges of independent learning. We involve and stimulate all the nine intelligences. The focus is on both academic content and the development of essential skills like critical thinking, intellectual curiosity and the ability to speak and write effectively Concepts are taught using audio-visual aids as well as storytelling and enacting, to make it more exciting. In understanding ideas, asking questions and working out answers, children improve skills like reading, analyzing, writing, researching, reasoning and communicating. In the process, they develop both strong academic skills and lasting self-confidence.
Apart from English, Mathematics, and Science, they begin to study a second language. Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Computer Science, General Knowledge and Physical Education, become a part of their curriculum. At RIS, experiential learning is encouraged and facilitated through child-friendly teachers; individual attention to children; group discussions and interactions and carefully selected books and learning aids. Children are encouraged to learn about themselves and the people and things around them, including abstract concepts. The emphasis is on anxiety-free learning rather than reading and writing by rote. Learning outside the classroom is much-loved aspects of everyday school life. Children learn other important lessons too: to share, abide by simple rules, get on well with other children and accept the authority of adults. Happy learning, self-confidence, concern for others and a safe environment characterize our primary classes.
Assessments – The grade given to the students is based on an aggregate of written tests, class participation, oral presentations, projects, assignments and other practical work. Every lesson is tested upon completion. Formative Assessments are conducted every two months and summative assessments are conducted at the end of each term. External Assessments – Our students also do us proud by participating in competitive exams and national Olympiads like the ISTSE, Gray Matters, SOF, ASSET, HOMI BHABHA, Spell Beeetc..
